Fourteen-time Grammy award winner Shawn ‘JAY Z’ Carter is an artist, songwriter, record producer and entrepreneur. He’s dominated an evolution in music for more than a decade and, during his time as President and CEO of Def Jam Recordings, fostered the careers of international stars Rihanna, Ne-Yo and Kanye West. His philanthropic work includes the Water For Life initiative and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation.
Twelve days ago, four flames travelled from the summits of the highest peaks in the four UK nations to Stoke Mandeville – birthplace of the Paralympic Movement – where they were united to create the London 2012 Paralympic Flame.
The following day, the Flame arrived in the Stadium at the Opening of the Games, carrying with it the spirit of the Paralympics and bringing the nations of the world together.
Burning bright noon and night across 11 days of sporting excellence, the Flame is now extinguished. A powerful and poignant moment, it signifies the end of the London 2012 Paralympic Games and the countdown to Rio 2016.
Philip Craven represented Great Britain at Wheelchair Basketball at five Games, 1972-88. Vastly experienced, both as an athlete and progressive administrator, he received a knighthood in 2005. This is his third Summer Games since becoming President of the IPC in 2001.
An authentic Olympic giant, Seb Coe won two gold and two silver medals over successive Games – 1980 and 1984. In 1979 he broke three different world records in 41 days and his rivalry with fellow middle-distance runner Steve Ovett is one of the great Olympic stories.
